The federal government is sitting on billions in cash and precious resources which could be used to pay for government services and reduce the deficit. At the same time, the government is wasting large sums of taxpayer money on duplicate services.
The Government Accountability Office, Congress’s chief investigatory arm, has released its latest report on duplication within the government and has found that, despite some progress, dozens of agencies are still doing the same jobs.
The investigation found the biggest areas of overlap include job training and treatment for mental illness. More than 100 federal programs exist to aid individuals with mental illness, with no real coordination between them.
The report is the GAO’s fifth, beginning in 2010 when U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) helped to task the body with studying redundancy.
